De-light is a light for more flavorful dining experience. Just like the user sprinkles salt and pepper on food for richer taste, he or she can sprinkle RGB to change the color of the dining light and make the food look more appetizing. For example, user can add red color to the light by shaking the RGB shaker indicating 'R'.
De-light is the first individual project I did after learning physical prototyping in Interaction Design class. De-light may look rough and need areas to improve, but it is one of the projects I think dearly of because it empowered me to make my ideas and concepts tangible. I love the concept of the product and would like to develop the design further in the future.
De-light is inspired by Dr.Seuss's “Green Eggs and Ham” . In the story, a child insists that the adult should try green eggs and ham. The adult refuses at first because green eggs and hams do not look delicious, but rather spoiled. But at last, he takes a bite and finds it surprisingly pleasurable. De-light was inspired from this story, which shows that people have different perceptions on food.
Dining is a daily routine that may not be skipped even for a day. We prepare food, sit down at a table, and consume what is on the plate for three times a day. Having meal is not only vital for one’s health and nutrition, but also provides a relaxing period for people during the day. Eating is a pleasurable experience that brings satisfaction to one’s taste buds. De-light was designed to augment this bliss by allowing people to manage their own perception of food.
(1) Light can have an impact on people’s appetite
The light color that makes the food look the most appetizing depends on the color of the food itself. For instance, salad looks the most delicious in green light while tomato soup looks the best in red light. In the photos below, the tart in yellow light looks the sweetest. In contrast, blue light clearly takes away the appetite.
(2) Children often find foods in peculiar color fun
For instance, while adults perceive foods in blue spoiled, children find them interesting. Heinz even produced EZ Squirt, green, purple and blue ketchup for children to attract their attention.
However, although there is much potential in customizable color lighting system for dining, there are none specifically designed for the purpose. De-light has its significance in its specificity and the clear design goal, making dining delightful.
Ideation & Prototyping
Since De-light is a light for dining, a form that can go with dining experience was needed and salt and pepper shaker concept was perfect for it. As if one sprinkles salt and pepper on food, user can sprinkle R,G,B to alter the light color.
User Scenario & Applications
(1) De-light can make dates more delightful
Red wine and steak become more tempting in ruddy color of the light. User can set up the mood using de-light and make the date perfect.
(2) De-light can be effective for people on diet
Since food in shades of blue makes people to lose appetite, having blue color of light will prevent people from eating too much.
(3) De-light can handle picky eating children
Because children are attracted to foods that are in unusual colors, de-light can be a help for picky eaters to find interest in the food they do not like. For example, by shedding magenta color on green vegetables, children may get interested and try.
